Portrait Notes of Queen Victoria:1861 - 1867
In 1859, Sir James Wilson, the Finance Member in the newly created Governor General’s Council mooted the idea of a Government issued paper currency. The first series of Uniface notes, issued by the Government of India with the portrait of Queen Victoria, with guaranteed payment were introduced in circulation through the Indian Paper Money Act of 1861.
